Do You Suffer From TMJ Disorder?

A lot of patients will come to the office complaining of TMJ issues. This is known as temporomandibular joint disorder and can be caused by a number of reasons.

Sometimes this discomfort can be relieved by a nightguard, or by getting botox injections into the masseter or temporalis muscles.

At your consultation appointment, an exam and a discussion will determine what is the best course of action for your particular situation.

Nightguard for TMJ Treatment

A nightguard is a great way to protect your teeth from the everyday wear and tear.

Most people do some type of grinding in their sleep and will wake up with a sore jaw the next day unaware of what action has taken place throughout the night. This is destructive for not only the jaw but the teeth. Severe grinders can often break or crack teeth especially teeth with large silver fillings.

Daily grinding often creates places in teeth known as wear facets where the cusps from one tooth dig into the opposing tooth. They also cause fracture lines and chipping of teeth.

If you notice any of these signs of wear you should be evaluated for a custom guard.

Scheduling an Appointment for a Nightguard

At this appointment, impressions will be taken using a digital scanner for accurate results and fit. The guard will take approximately 3 weeks to fabricate.

At the delivery appointment any adjustments will be made and care instructions will be given.

When to Wear Your Nightguard

Another question I often get is “Do I only have to wear the guard at night?”

The answer is, no. A nightguard can actually be worn whenever you notice yourself grinding the most. If that is in rush hour traffic then throw that baby in there (you get my point!)

Essentially, a guard is meant for just that….protection at any time of day.

Botox for TMJ Treatment

Botox is a great tool for relieving migraines and tmj discomfort.

When botox is used for tmj, it is injected directly into the masseter muscles. This is the large muscle you can feel by palpating the jaw below the ear and gritting your teeth together.

This muscle often becomes extremely overworked and can cause significant headaches and discomfort when eating. In this case, botox is administered into the masseter muscle, reducing the ability to fully contract which reduces the fatigue and discomfort.

How Long Does Botox Last?

It is not uncommon for more units to be administered at your follow up appointment. This is because some people use this muscle in excess more than someone else and the treatment will need to be tailored to meet your specific needs.

Once we have reached the amount that works best for you, maintenance will be every 3-4 months depending on symptoms.
