Tooth Extraction in Williamsburg, VA

Tooth extraction, or pulling a tooth, is necessary when the tooth cannot be repaired because it is broken, fractured, infected, or decayed.

Removing a problem tooth is an effective treatment that can alleviate pain, remove a source of infection, and prevent future dental problems. Also, it can be a smart choice if you have crowded teeth and need to make room for braces or implants.

If you have a broken, cracked, or severely decayed tooth, you should make an appointment as soon as possible.

Tooth Extractions

Need a dentist to pull a tooth out?

Yes we absolutely can pull teeth!

Although, we don’t like to if we don’t have too! Sometimes you find yourself in one of these situations

  1. The tooth has to come out because it cannot be fixed with a filling or a crown
  2. You decide against a root canal and a crown and decide to pull it or
  3. Financially it makes more sense for you to do so.

Whatever the reason may be, we will help you navigate that decision carefully.

If it is the best option for you and we feel the extraction can be done in office, then we will do that for you.

How to Fill the Gap After Tooth Extraction

With an extraction, comes the question of what to do next for the missing tooth.

We will help you decide on replacement options for that area.

Just a few options to think about are a bridge, implant, or possibly a partial depending on the circumstances.

Tooth Extraction After Care

I’ve just had an extraction, what do I do now?

Following an extraction, the area may be sore for anywhere from several days to several weeks depending on how many extractions you had and if any bone had to be removed or grafted.

I always tell patients that while bruising is not extremely common it can happen as well.

A warm compress will work well for this and should be applied directly to the area.

Some slight bleeding is normal and expected. An example of this would be waking up following an extraction and a slight blood spot was on the pillow.

Pain killers are not typically prescribed following an extraction. Discomfort can usually be alleviated with a combination of over-the-counter pain killers such as Tylenol and ibuprofen. When used at the right combination and level, they can be more effective than narcotics for treating these symptoms.
