Do You Have a Cavity?

A lot of people will ask “How do I have a cavity but I brush every day?”

People forget that most cavities are caused by food between the teeth. This is why flossing is so crucial to your everyday routine.

While brushing is great and is just as important as flossing, it will not stop all cavities.

It’s been 20 years since your last filling and you forgot what to expect. It’s the night before or day of and you are stressed.

No worries. At this appointment, we will bring you back and update your health history. I will then get you nice and numb by using local anesthesia. Throughout your appointment we will give you breaks if needed, and will always ask how you are doing.

We will clean out all of the decay and place the filling material, followed by adjusting and polishing the restoration. Depending on how much anesthesia is needed, you may be numb for a short time after the procedure.

We want you to be comfortable, especially given the circumstances. We understand that coming to the dentist is sometimes not the most favorite place to be, and that is why we strive to separate ourselves from the past image of dentistry.

Dental Fillings: Quick, Comfortable, and Effective

A dental filling is one of the most common procedures—and for good reason. It’s a simple and effective way to restore a tooth that has been damaged by a cavity.

What Happens During a Tooth Filling Appointment?

  1. Numbing: First, we’ll gently numb the area around the tooth so you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
  2. Removing Decay: Using specialized instruments, we remove the decayed part of the tooth and clean the area thoroughly.
  3. Shaping & Bonding: Once the decay is gone, we reshape the space and apply bonding materials to help the filling adhere properly.
  4. Filling the Tooth: We then place a tooth-colored resin (composite) into the cleaned area and shape it to match your natural tooth.
  5. Curing: A special curing light is used to harden the filling material in just seconds.
  6. Final Touches: We’ll adjust your bite if needed and polish the filling to make it smooth, comfortable, and natural-looking.

What to Expect After a Tooth Filling

The tooth filling is fully hardened by the time you leave the office, so you can eat and drink right away. Some mild sensitivity is normal for a short time, but it usually resolves quickly.
